Q: I had a duplicate key made at a hardware store and it doesn't work, why?
A: We have plenty of clients who go to a major hardware stores to have a duplicate key made, and then they come to us to have it done right. It’s important to remember that a locksmith specializes in making keys. Locksmith key machines are typically better quality and are always kept up to date and calibrated. Typically, key duplication machines need to be calibrated at a minimum of once a month (usually more). This is a maintenance requirement that most major hardware stores neglect.
Q: How would you define a safe lock?
A: A lock is only as safe as it’s cylinder. The market is flooded with several cylinder types, most of which can be opened using one method or another. As a result of this, manufacturers are always working to make their cylinders more resistant to common picking methods.
Q: Should I add a double sided dead bolt (key on both sides) on the exterior doors of my property, is it safe?
A: Double sided deadbolts are typically used on glass doors where the lock mechanism is within arms reach of the glass. The reason for this type of lock is in a case where someone breaks the glass, they won’t be able to unlock the door by simply reaching in. However, before choosing such a lock, you should check local laws since in some cities and specific situations, this lock may be prohibited as a safety measure against fire.
Q: How Long Will it Take to get me in to My Locked Apartment using a locksmith?
A: There are several methods to gain entry, so the time taken varies. However, Chicago Lock & Key has highly trained technicians that specialize in gaining entry quickly and efficiently. We are also mobile, so our response time is far less than your average locksmith.
Q: Is it that easy to copy my key to my house?
A: Unfortunately, yes. Keys generally contain code that allows someone else to create an original key after only having it in their posession for a short time. Keep your keys with you at all times. If you’re often in a situation where you need to lend keys or have other hold your keys, Medco locks are designed to make unauthorized duplication more difficult and come highly recommended.
Q: I just moved into a new Apartment / Home /Commercial Building, should I re-key the locks? The keys work well.
A: When first moving into a new property, you should always rekey the existing locks. This is recommended even if the previous owner says this has already been done. Ordering the rekey yourself, means you are on site and seeing that it indeed only you that has keys to those locks. Rekeys are also recommended because they are more cost effective than changing out your entire lock.
Q: I have two or three different keys that go to my property, can I make one key work everything?
A: Yes. However, it is recommended that your entry door require at least two keys to at least two separate locks, all locks can be made to match either of those two keys.
Q: I would like 1 key that works all the locks on my house and 1 key that my Gardner can use to get into one gate and nothing else, is this possible?
A: Yes. This is reffered to as “Master Keying”. The property owner has one Master key that works on all locks, while some locks may require different keys otherwise. This is especially important in cases where keys need to be lent and have a probablility of being duplicated. Of course, for your safety, a master key should never be lent or leave your person at anytime.
Q: What are High Security Locks (with Restricted Keys) and why should I consider putting them on my property?
A: High security locks are designed to restrict key duplication. They are also pick proof and drill resistant. Meco locks are the most popular manufacturer of such high security locks. They are of course more expensive than your typical lock. But, the added security and piece of mind make them worth every penny.
Q: Is it really necessary to use a professional locksmith company?
A: Absolutely. Essentially, when you’re getting lock service done, you are trusting that company with the security of your home, your car, your safe, and all of your valuables. Locks and keys are our first line of defense against unauthorized access. If you are not getting your service from a professional and licensed locksmith to do so, you are putting your belongings and your family at risk. Simply installing a lock is not enough. Most locks need to be adjusted to seal any compromises to the door or lock’s security.
Q: Can I schedule a specific time for a Locksmith to meet me?
A: Yes. We operate 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. We will be happy to schedule an appointment for any time that is convenient for you.
Q: Why do I have to fidget with my keys in the lock in order to make them work?
A: Locks wear over time. If you see that you need to “jiggle” your keys to make them work properly, we recommend letting a technician take a look. There can be several causes for the “jiggle” symptoms. It may simply be your key, but on some occasions this could be evidence of previous attempts by someone tampering with your locks. It could also mean that your cylinder needs replacing. Replacing the cylinder is recommended because if you wait for your lock to stop functioning, you can be faced with a much more costly endeavor. Remember, preventive maintenance always saves you money in the long run.
Q: I have a key marked “Do Not Duplicate.” Can I get a copy of it anyway?
A: Some keys are marked “Do Not Duplicate, “Do Not Copy” or “Unlawful to Copy”. It is against the law to have such keys duplicated with you the original owner present. Even though this is the law, some locksmiths will duplicate for an “extra fee”. These locksmiths should be avoided at all costs. The above mentioned stamps are a detterent for unlawful duplication. If you are not authorized to duplicate a key, then a locksmith should not offer to do it for you anyway. If you do not wish to have your keys duplicated by someone unauthorized to do so, we recommend having your keys stamped. This should at least make duplication a more difficult task for those attempting to gain unauthorized access.
